Apolipoprotein E : E2, E3, and E4 variantsApolipoprotein E (apoE) is a 34 kDa glycosylated protein with multiple biological properties. The common genotypes of the Apolipoprotein E gene are known to be linked to Alzheimers' disease (E4 variant) and to atherosclerosis (E2 and E4 variants) and have to be taken into account in any phenotypic or genotypic studies of these diseases. Recent data suggest that Apolipoprotein E possesses also biologically relevant immunomodulatory effects. Apolipoprotein E - deficient mice have altered immune responses after bacterial inoculation and increased susceptibility to endotoxemia induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).References 1.
